The Master in Fashion Design starts in January and ends in December. Its teaching structure is made of a series of project seminars, different every year, facing all the issues that are useful to train a complete designer. The Master in Fashion Design relies on the collaboration of a network of professionals and leading companies in the several areas of interest. The first two months, January and February, are dedicated to integrate the background of the students with the analysis of the complex retail, fair and display systems of the Italian 'filiera' The students are asked to work on the creative methodologies and on the knowledge of the territory and of the Italian Fashion System through two research and design project seminars in collaboration with experts operating in the sector. The themes faced during the course are in fact constantly updated keeping in mind the social, commercial and methodological evolution of the Fashion System. Within each project seminar - which usually lasts three/four weeks - lectures and different meetings are organised (psychology of fashion, anthropology, socio-economic forecasting, marketing and management, textile culture, contemporary art, etc.) on the theme of the project seminar, which is consequently analysed from different angles, thanks to the support coming from the different professionals. The development of a personal research methodology acquires a fundamental role and represents the basis on which to work during the rest of the year, especially after the summer holidays, when the students are asked to work on the final Masters Thesis. In March the project seminars with companies and fashion designers begin. Both designers and companies can operate either by their own or through tandems which are organised in such a way that they stimulate the dialogue with the students. The briefs of the projects will be more complex and articulated. The students are not just asked to develop a design project, but a whole pathway highlighting their strategic capacities in using concept and research tools applied to the project. In this phase, the confrontation with the world of companies represents the operative key in order to build a path which is closer to the philosophy of the laboratory than to the traditional teaching structure.
The students will have the opportunity to face the reality of the system in the different product and market categories. They will work in collaboration with fashion designers representing the international Ready-to-Wear, as well as with companies operating in wider areas of the market. During this period, the students will be proposed a series of meetings with all the professionals operating in the sector, in order to provide them with an exhaustive overview of the operative opportunities of the Fashion System, along with a deeper comprehension of the different competencies.
Thanks to the meeting with journalists, textile agents, buyers, agencies for the organisation of fashion shows and events, PRs, marketing managers and CEOs, the students will have the chance to establish a precious dialogue for their professional future. At the end of this second phase, around July, the companies that have collaborated with the school will select the students who proposed the most interesting results during the project seminar, in order to follow them, with their tutorship, in the final project for the Masters. The final project for the Masters, is developed from September to December and it represents a moment in which the student have the opportunity to work individually with the companies and the fashion designers on the selected theme. At the same time, the revision and the meetings on specific issues will carry on with the director of project activity and with the experts of the different fields. The Masters thesis will be presented at the end of November in the final examination. In December, all the Masters projects will be part of an exhibition open both to the public and to the press.
The Master's course in Accessories Design begins in January and ends in December. It is divided into three phases:
January - March
The first months of the course are dedicated to laying the conceptual groundwork on which to pursue our inquiries into the fashion industry so as to be better able to apply various methodological processes into the students' projects. The Fashion Department's fundamental courses (psychology, anthropology, socio-economic forecasting, marketing and management, contemporary art) are shared so as to allow students a fuller exchange of ideas. The first two design seminars take place in groups composed of students from the two departments. In the course of each design seminar, an analytic theme is selected which is also covered in the classes so as to provide students with all the necessary support toward the development of their projects. The basic design phase concludes in March with the third joint-department seminar where reviews occur separately in order to analyze the different program requirements.
March - July
Joint classroom activity continues with visiting faculty presenting the various professional specializations involved in this field. In this phase, the Master's course in AD forges its own specific path through some design seminars and workshops. The classroom activities also delve into matters pertaining to the field of accessories: graphic representational techniques, the culture of materials, and design culture with classes and workshops dedicated to bags, footwear, and jewelry. During this part of the year, the projects developed in collaboration with leading companies take place; in subsequent class-work, these projects will become the reference points for the students' Master's theses.
September - December
From September until the end of the course, students may work individually with companies and designers on the topic of their thesis. Meanwhile, project revisions and meetings with the project supervisor and with professionals in the field continue. The Master's thesis is presented during final exams at the end of November. In December, all the Master's projects are exhibited in a show open to the public and to the press.
